Finding the right therapist can be challenging; running into challenges such as scheduling, finding a therapists who aligns with your needs, or finding someone within a reasonable driving distance. During the COVID-19 pandemic, virtual (or telepsychology) began making its grand entrance, allowing people to have greater access to mental health providers. Even though in-person sessions have mostly regained momentum, people seeking mental health services have continued to benefit from the convenience of telepsychology. However, there were still limitations with clients seeking providers. Psychologists are only able to see clients in the state in which they are licensed, even if the therapy takes place virtually. What happens if I move? What happens if I go to college out of state? What if I’m on vacation or traveling for work? Every state’s rules differ within their jurisdiction, but most of the laws state that a therapist must be licensed in the state that the CLIENT is located in, not the psychologist.
PSYPACT (Psychological Interjurisdictional Compact) was created for licensed psychologists to practice telepsychology across multiple states without having to obtain additional licenses for each state. This allows for more opportunities for people to find a psychologist! The following states are currently participating in PSYPACT:
